How To Care For Inflatable Boat Fabric

The fabric that an inflatable boat is constructed from makes all the difference in how it performs and how long it will last. It is the foundation of the entire structure and determines whether it will resist punctures, abrasions and UV radiation. It is also what allows for the creation of a rigid structure that provides strength and stability to the boat. Inflatable boat fabrics are usually made from two types of materials, hypalon or PVC.  It is coated onto polyester or nylon fabric which allows it to be abrasion resistant, strong and extremely airtight.

PVC is the most commonly used material for boats because it is cheaper to produce, easier to weld and glue, and has the greatest resistance to ultraviolet radiation. It is very durable, and is a great choice for RIBs that will see regular use.

Inflatable boat manufacturers use polyester fabric as a backing on their PVC fabrics for added strength and durability. This fabric is woven with either polyester or nylon threads, depending on the manufacturer and is available in a variety of weights. The higher the denier or decitex number, the heavier and more durable the fabric.

Aside from selecting the right material for your boat, it is essential to care for it properly to ensure that it has a long lifespan. All fabric should be thoroughly cleaned after every use with warm water and mild soap. It is important to dry the fabric completely before storage as a wet fabric will grow mildew and mold very quickly. In addition, all seams must be checked regularly for tears and holes as they can rip easily. If any of these are found, they should be patched immediately to prevent further damage and to avoid the need for repairs.
